Caregivers

Portal

When someone suffers a spinal cord injury, the entire family is impacted. It is life-changing, and it can be overwhelming. In most cases, the role of primary care giver is taken up by a family member. It’s a 24-7 position that comes with no training. The Caregivers Portal provides support to the unsung heroes who take up the mantle of caregiver.

It starts with our Caregivers Working Group, which serves as a sounding board in developing programming. Empathy and compassion stand at the core. Patience, effective communication, and problem-solving are critical skills in delivering quality care. Our goal is to provide the support and connection to resources that allow caregivers to attend to their own needs, too.

This program is made possible through the generous support of the Edgar Snyder and Associates Foundation

Caring for a person with a spinal cord injury (SCI) is a demanding job. Caregivers may face physical challenges such as lifting and moving the SCI individual. Additionally, caregivers often face emotional challenges such as dealing with the person’s frustrations and feelings of loneliness or isolation. Caring for a person with an SCI can be expensive, and the stress related to the cost of necessary equipment, therapies, and medications can build quickly.

Our Caregivers Working Group provides an opportunity for caregivers to connect with others who are in similar situations. They can share their experiences and offer advice and support to one another. They can also find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their struggles.

“We support the Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation’s mission of giving those with spinal cord injuries and their caregivers the support, resources, and funding they need to live independent and meaningful lives. As a family that has faced life-altering spinal cord and brain injuries, we have seen firsthand the importance of building a solid community around recovery and rehabilitation.”
