The UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital Rehabilitation Unit (CHRU) provides family-centered inpatient rehabilitation care for babies under 1-year-old to young adults up to age 25.
Overnight Programming
The CHRU is a CARF-Accredited inpatient rehabilitation unit that works to improve a child’s health and function while promoting skills to increase a child’s independence and improve their quality of life.
We offer family-centered, individualized, team-based care that incorporates medical, nursing, physical therapy, occupation therapy and speech therapy services. Other services available at CHRU include peer support, schoolteacher, recreation therapy, healthful community outings, psychology, social work, care coordination, and music, art, and pet therapy.
CHRU works closely with expert providers for specialized assessment of vision, assistive technology (AT), durable medical equipment (DME), orthotics and prosthetics, and home accessibility.
Our goal at CHRU is to provide extensive education and training for a family’s transition back home and life outside of the hospital.
Club Programming
We serve include children and young adults from ages 1 to 25, diagnosed with but not limited to: traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injury, traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, amputation, pulmonary/mechanical respiratory support, deconditioning, complex orthopedic injuries, and other neurological conditions.
Our spinal cord program specifically considers the cause, location, and completeness of injury, and how injury may affect function. Comorbidities are evaluated and incorporated into the team’s plan of care. We offer evidence-based, innovative rehabilitation to promote both neurorecovery and independent function to help children and young adults return to living full and vibrant lives.
Geographic areas served: UPMC Children’s Hospital is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our inpatient acute care hospital, inpatient rehabilitation unit, outpatient medical clinics, and outpatient therapy clinics are located in the Pittsburgh area. Our services are available to children who meet criteria for admission.
